Sitting in China

In Sitting in China, Michael Wolf travels through China — and focuses his lens on an amazing target — chairs.

From the overstuffed chairs of fancy hotels to the worn stools in the streets of Beijing, each chair and stool has its own character — as does its occupant.

As the collection of photographs gathered in Sitting in China suggests, Michael Wolf's great trick is to present each chair as a personal portrait of its user. His compelling images capture many facets of this large country — from its chairs to the mindset of its people.

About Michael Wolf

Michael Wolf was born in Munich in 1954 and lived in the United States from 1955 to 1973.

He quit his studies at the University of California to study photography at the Folkwangschule Essen with Otto Steinhart. And he has worked as a photographer ever since.

In 1987, he became a member of the photo agency VISUM, and in 1995, he moved to Hong Kong where he works for Stern magazine — and on his own long-term projects.
