The Globalist Marketplace Quiz: Mind the (Gender) Gap

By The Globalist | Thursday, December 17, 2009

With the holiday season upon us, people around the world are turning their attention to vacations and time with family and friends. In this edition of The Globalist Quiz on public radio's Marketplace, we examine which gender spends the most time relaxing each day.

Editor's Note: Click here to listen to this feature, which aired on public radio's Marketplace on December 7, 2009.

BILL RADKE, HOST OF PUBLIC RADIO’S MARKETPLACE: The leisure travel industry will keep tightening into next year, according to a Florida travel research firm called White Market. Based on their surveys, about half of households are planning some kind of leisure trip in the next six months — an even smaller share than last year. The number one reason is, of course, the household budget. And leisure is the subject of this morning’s Marketplace Globalist Quiz, with our quizmaster Stephan Richter of TheGlobalist.com. Good morning.

STEPHAN RICHTER, PUBLISHER AND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE GLOBALIST: Good morning, Bill. Are you ready for today’s Globalist Quiz?

RADKE: Yes, I am.

RICHTER: So here’s my question and it concerns the gender gap. Is it true that men in the developed world have more leisure time than women? Or is that false?

RADKE: Well, I am always hearing women are taking on more responsibility. I am going to guess it’s true — men have more leisure time.

RICHTER: Yes, that’s true.

RADKE: Ok. And how about in the United States — how does leisure time differ between women and men?

RICHTER: You know, it’s interesting. The OECD did measurements for all its member countries, and it found that each day American men on average have an extra 38 minutes of leisure time compared to U.S. women.

RADKE: 38 minutes per day?

RICHTER: Per day. And that doesn’t sound like a lot — a minute here, a minute there. But over the course of the year, it adds up to 13,870 minutes — or almost ten days of extra leisure time.

RADKE: So I was right on this question and my wife is right in general, as usual. And do Americans have much more leisure time than the rest of the world?

RICHTER: No, in fact they are outdone — wouldn’t you know it — by the Italians. They are the kings in terms of taking time off. Italian men have an average of almost 80 minutes more leisure time each day than Italian women do — and that’s double the U.S. level.

RADKE: Stephan Richter, thanks.
