How
to Contribute
Storytelling for a Global Audience
Telling the story of globalization.
Whether you live in Bangkok or Brussels, Boston
or Bogota, The Globalist considers — and regularly features — articles
written by outside contributors. We are looking for insightful observations
that say something powerful and original about global trends and
issues that shape all of our lives. The
articles we publish are intended to sharpen the understanding of
a particular country, region or issue — in refreshing, thought-provoking
or previously untold ways.
eatures
on The Globalist should be cogently argued and are usually between
750 and 900 words long. Before submitting an article for consideration,
please refer to the guidelines below.
General
guidelines
Our
overall editorial direction is to focus on the
power of comparisons between nations and societies,
economies and cultures — and to make profound arguments on that
basis.
We
are focused on being globally inclusive
and, at times, a tad irreverent
— but never arrogant.
Our
primary audience are not policy experts, but —
broadly speaking — the "global middle class" in
countries all around the world. Consequently,
our
worst nightmare is the MEGO syndrome
(aka "my eyes glaze over").
When
you write your draft, ensure that the story — in the way you
frame it — intrigues, say, your (fictitious) brother who may
be a school teacher, or your sister who could be an architect
or dental technician.
The
first paragraph of the article should
generally be used to "situationalize" the reader.
It should establish the story frame, which is best achieved
by setting up an intriguing or surprising angle.
Whatever
you write, do all of the above without dumbing down your narrative
in any fashion. |
Checklist
What
happened to whom, where — and why is it important? |
How
does the story you write about illuminate a larger cultural
or historic context? |
And
how does publishing this feature help people around the world
understand matters they did not know before? |
Please
submit drafts via e-mail to: mmccarthy (at) theglobalist (dotcom).
Due to the volume of manuscripts received, you will only be contacted
if we accept your piece.
If
we accept your draft, we will prepare an edited version for you
to review before publication. We will also ask that you send us
a 150-word biographical sketch and a color photo for use on our
site.
