Managing Director, Brookings Institution

William J. Antholis is the managing director of the Brookings Institution. He works with the institution’s president, vice presidents and board of trustees to set Brookings strategic direction and manage its policy research.

Mr. Antholis is also a senior fellow in Brookings’ Governance Studies program. He is the author of the forthcoming book, “Inside Out, India and China: Local Politics Go Global,” which will be released in September 2013. It explores how country-sized provinces and states in the world’s two biggest nations are increasingly becoming global players. He also co-authored (with Strobe Talbott) “Fast Forward: Ethics and Politics in the Age of Global Warming” (Brookings, 2010).

In the late 1990s, Mr. Antholis served at the White House and U.S. Department of State. He was director of international economic affairs at the National Security Council, and he served on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff as well as in the Economic Affairs Bureau. From 1999-2004, he was director of studies at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

He earned a B.A. in government and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in politics at Yale University.
