David. R. Montgomery is a professor of earth and space sciences at the University of Washington. He studies the evolution of topography and the influence of geomorphological processes on ecological systems and human societies.

Mr. Montgomery’s published work includes studies of the evolution and near-extirpation of salmon, fluvial and hillslope processes in mountain drainage basins, the evolution of mountain ranges (Cascades, Andes, and Himalaya) — and the analysis of digital topography.

Mr. Montgomery is the author of “King of Fish: The Thousand-Year Run of Salmon.” His current research includes field projects in eastern Tibet and the Pacific Northwest of North America.

He received his B.S. in geology from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in geomorphology from University of California, Berkeley.
