A weekly examination of an earth shattering number

Focus: Global Population

According to the United Nations Population Division, 2.6 billion is the total expected increase in the world population between 2005 and 2050.

The current world population numbers about 6.6 billion — and is expected to reach a total of just under 9.1 billion people by the middle of the century. That represents a 50% increase.

99% of that increase in the world's population will occur in the developing world.

China (with its 1.3 billion people) and India (with its 1.1 billion people) together currently have a    population of just over 2.4 billion people.

That means that a bit more than another China and another India will be added to the global population by 2050.

The upshot

As recently as 1950, the total world population amounted to 2.7 billion. Thus, almost as many people will be added to the world population between now and 2050 as were alive by the middle of the 20th century!
