Coal King Despite its negative environmental effects, coal is the world's fastest-growing energy source. It is especially prevalent in developing economies, most of which are more focused on economic growth than on the CO2 emissions and pollution produced by the cheap fuel. We wonder: Which country is most dependent on coal? A. China The correct answer is D. South Africa is the worlds coal king, with coal accounting for an astounding 77.7% of the countrys energy consumption (according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2009). The continent of Africa as a whole is the worlds second-most coal-reliant area, behind the Asia-Pacific region. World coal consumption grew by 3.1% in 2008, making it the worlds fastest-growing primary energy source for the sixth consecutive year. From 2006 to 2030, global coal consumption is projected to increase by 49%. |
