Checking Up On Doctor Salaries

As the U.S. Congress wrangles over the details of healthcare reform, a key priority is lowering costs. We wonder:

How much do American doctors earn compared to doctors in other rich countries?

A) The same
B) Twice as much
C) Four times as much
D) Ten percent less

The right answer is B. Doctors in America make twice as much as doctors in the rest of the developed world.

The average physician or specialist makes $230,000 in the United States, while the average general practitioner makes $161,000. Thus, U.S. doctors make five times more than their patients.

In comparison, the average physician or specialist salary in the developed world is $113,000, compared with $83,000 for general practitioners.
