In conversations with Marketplace Morning Report hosts Bill Radke and Steve Chiotakis, Stephan Richter explores intriguing angles on the global economy.

Junk Food Nation?

Americans' waistlines are continuing to expand, causing healthcare costs to rise. We wonder:

Which junk food has seen its consumption level decrease the most among U.S. children?

A) Hot dogs
B) Chicken nuggets
C) French fries
D) Colas

The correct answer is D. According to market research firm NPD Group, which asks survey participants daily what they and their family ate and ordered at restaurants, consumption of colas among U.S. children under age 13 dropped 10% in 2008.

This compares with a decrease of 8% for chicken nuggets and strips, 7% for french fries and 6% for hot dogs.

While the popularity of some types of junk food has decreased, consumption of soup increased 29%, grilled chicken sandwiches 26%, yogurt 21%, carrots 9% and fruit 6%.
