A Nepalese Journey:
The Essence of the Annapurna Circuit

Trekking in the Himalayas is a transformative experience. Andrew Stevenson's A Nepalese Journey is more than a collection of inspirational photographs.

Insightful in his photography and storytelling, Mr. Stevenson really brings the experience of trekking alive. His images tell the tales of the people met along the way. He savors "the incredible diversity of cultures, geography, flora and fauna, geology, religions, ethnic types and architecture that comprise the Annapurnas."

The light of the Annapurnas — a massive mountain range — fills the pages of A Nepalese Journey. This is true whether it takes the warm glow of the sun in which a western trekker basks or the magical light that enters into an otherwise dark shop.

The light falls upon the somber faces of children staring earnestly into the camera — or forms shadows as they dance, oblivious to the photographer's presence.

It accentuates the angles and lines of the faces of those sitting by the fire, and highlights the chartreuse of a terraced hillside. It glances off snowfields and glistens in the drops of water in a fountain.

About Andrew Stevenson

Andrew Stevenson was born in Canada, but spent his childhood in Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Scotland, Malaysia and Singapore. He performed post-graduate studies in international economics in France, Canada and Norway.

He has since worked all over the world, including the United Nations Development Programme in Tanzania. He also was a consultant in international development for the Canadian, Norwegian and Swedish governments.

Between traveling extensively through almost all of Africa and Asia, Mr. Stevenson also owned two adventure companies in Norway. An avid pilot, he now resides in Bermuda with his wife where he writes on a full-time basis.

A narrative about Mr. Stevenson's first Annapurna trek, Annapurna Circuit: Himalayan Journey was published in 1997. He has additionally written travelogues on Norway, Australia and New Zealand, the latter two featuring the Aboriginal people of each country.

A Nepalese Journey was just recently selected as one of four finalists at the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival.
