Foreign and Security Policy Adviser, German Federal Chancellery, Berlin

Christoph Heusgen has served as the Foreign and Security Policy Adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel since 2005.

Prior to his service in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin, he worked at the Council of the European Union from 1999 to 2005, including as deputy general director and head of the political staff for Javier Solana in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels.

Mr. Heusgen joined the German foreign service in 1980. Positions he held there include deputy head of the EU policy unit where the Maastricht Treaty was among his responsibilities, deputy head for EU affairs and Under Secretary for European Affairs.

Christoph Heusgen studied economics in St. Gallen, Statesboro (Georgia) and Paris. In 1980, he received his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
