Carl Lankowski serves as Deputy Director of Area Studies and Coordinator for European Area Studies at the U.S. State Department’s diplomatic academy, the Foreign Service Institute.

Previously, from September 1995 through August 2000, Mr. Lankowski was the Research Director at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies.

Mr. Lankowski’s scholarly work has focused on the German economy, the political economy of European integration — and environmental politics and policies.

He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with his dissertation on Germany in the EU.

In 1984, Mr. Lankowski received a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation for his research on the German Green Party and the new social movements.
