Daniel Chirot

Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace

Daniel Chirot is a 2004-2005 Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. The focus of his current research is on religious and ethnic conflicts in West Africa.
Mr. Chirot is also a professor of International Studies and Sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

He has been a consultant for various foundations, the U.S. government and humanitarian organizations in Eastern Europe and in Africa.

In recent years, Mr. Chirot has also done consulting work in Niger, Senegal and especially the Ivory Coast — where he has taken three long trips since the start of the rebellion in September 2002. On these trips, he has interviewed people and worked on conflict mitigation projects in both the rebel and government zones.

Mr. Chirot first went to West Africa in 1964 as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger. He has written and edited nine books and many articles about Eastern Europe, social change, ethnic conflict and world politics.

Mr. Chirot has a B.A. from Harvard University in Social Studies and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Sociology.
