Eric Biel

Senior Counsel at Human Rights First — Washington, D.C.

Eric Biel is Senior Counsel in Human Rights First’s Washington office.

His responsibilities include covering U.S. law and security, international justice, workers’ rights and other issues.

Previously, he served as Deputy Under Secretary for Trade Policy, Counselor to the Secretary and Acting Director of the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning, U.S. Department of Commerce (1997-2000).

Mr. Biel also served as Staff Director of the Commission on Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy and was Senior Legislative Assistant to Senator Patrick Moynihan, the Commission’s Chairman (1995-1997). He served as International Trade Counsel with the Senate Finance Committee before that, from 1990 to 1995.

From 1985 to 1990, he was an attorney in private practice in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Biel received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1981 — and in 1985 completed a joint J.D.-M.P.A. program from Yale Law School and Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton.
