James C. McCann is a professor of history at Boston University.

Mr. McCann, is also the associate director of the African Studies Center at Boston University.

He has researched extensively in Africa — and has written detailed histories on both Ethiopia and the African environment.

In addition to “Maize and Grace,” he is the author of “Green Land, Brown Land, Black Land: An Environmental History of Africa, 1800-1999” (Heinemann, 1999).
