German Ambassador to Great Britain

On July 6, 2002 Thomas Matussek assumed his post as German ambassador to the Court of St James, London.

From 1999 he headed the political department in Berlin, and in 2001 organised the UN talks on Afghanistan at Petersberg, Bonn.

Thomas Matussek served as chief of cabinet to two foreign ministers, Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Klaus Kinkel, before being appointed plenipotentiary to Washington in 1994.

The ambassador was born in Lauda, Baden-Württemberg, in 1947 and entered the German foreign service in 1975, having studied Law in Paris and Bonn.

He has held postings throughout the world, including a three year stint in London in the late 70s.

Thomas Matussek counts mountaineering and skiing among his sporting interests. The ambassador is married and has three children.
