Jan Techau
Jan is a director with Eurasia Group’s Europe team, covering Germany and European security from Berlin.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as the head of speechwriting for the German Ministry of Defense. Before that, Jan was the director of Carnegie Europe and ran the Europe programs for the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the German Council on Foreign Relations.
Jan also served as a research adviser at the NATO Defense College’s research division in Rome and as director of the Richard Holbrooke Forum at the American Academy in Berlin.
In 1999-2000, he was a fellow in the Robert Bosch Foundation’s postgraduate program in international affairs in Brussels and Jerusalem.
In 2017, Jan published “Führungsmacht Deutschland,” a book he wrote with Leon Mangasarian that presents a blueprint for a new German foreign policy.
Jan holds a master’s degree in political science from Christian-Albrechts-Universität and has studied at Penn State and the University of Osnabrück. He is an avid reader, occasional hunter, and perennial dog lover—one passion at least that he shares with his kids.
