IMF Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean

Jonathan T. Fried is the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean to the IMF. From 2003 to 2006, he was Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Canada’s Prime Minister, Paul Martin, and Head of the Canada-U.S. Secretariat.

He also served as secretary to Cabinet committees on Global Affairs, and was the Canadian senior official responsible for coordination of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.

Mr. Fried’s prior experience includes serving as the Associate Deputy Minister at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, as the Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance and G-7 Deputy for Canada — as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Export Development Corporation.

He also served as Canada’s senior trade and economic policy official and chief negotiator on China’s accession to the WTO — and as Canada’s lead lawyer for NAFTA and its side agreement negotiations.
