Geremie R. Barmé is Professor of Pacific and Asian History at The Australian National University. Barmé received his PhD in Asian Studies from Australian National University and studied at universities in Japan and the People's Republic of China.

He has also worked as a freelance writer, journalist and translator in Hong Kong and China. His research work in Chinese culture and intellectual history has been interspersed with film, website and writing projects in the United States, China and Hong Kong. He was awarded the Joseph Levenson Prize for Modern China in 2004.
