On May 5, 2002, Jacques Chirac was re-elected President of France. Mr. Chirac was first elected President of France in 1995.
Previously, Jacques Chirac served as Prime Minister of France between 1986 and 1988.
After founding his own political party — Rally for the Republic — in 1976, he was elected as mayor of Paris in 1977, a position he held until 1995.
In 1974, Mr. Chirac was appointed minister of the interior.
In 1972, Jacques Chirac was appointed minister of agriculture and rural development.
Mr. Chirac attended the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) between 1951 and 1954, earning a degree in public service and politics.
