Correspondent and Assistant Editor for The Oriental Economist

Julie Norwell is a correspondent and assistant editor for The Oriental Economist (TOE) with responsibility for special projects relating to economic, political and business developments in the United States, Japan and Northeast Asia.

She is also a correspondent for Weekly Toyo Keizai, Japan’s third largest weekly business magazine published by TOE’s parent company, Toyo Keizai.

Ms. Norwell joined TOE after completing her graduate studies in international economic affairs with a concentration in Asian studies at George Washington University (GWU).

Her capstone project was an assessment of the IMF role in the Asian currency crisis. At GWU, Ms. Norwell wrote for U-Wire, a national university wire service.

Ms. Norwell began her specialization in Japanese affairs as a member of the Japan Exchange Teacher Program (JET) in Toyama Prefecture, where she lived for two years.

She was selected as a Toyama Prefecture Honorary Ambassador for a two-year stint in 1996 and again in 1998.

In addition to her M.A. from George Washington University, Ms. Norwell has a B.A. from Rutgers University in French and Communications and certificates of fluency in French from L’Université de Paris-Sorbonne.
