Pat Cox

President, EU Parliament

Pat Cox was elected President of the European Parliament in January 2002. He has since been instrumental in establishing the party’s participation in a national coalition government.

In 1998 he was elected President of the European Liberal Democrat Group, the third largest political grouping in the European Parliament, and then was unanimously re-elected as Group President in June 1999, following the elections to the European Parliament.

His strong interest in European affairs and intellectual curiosity and conviction about the European integration process encouraged a period as an economics lecturer at the Institute of Public Administration in Dublin.

Here, he contributed to the development of the first ever undergraduate program for European studies at an Irish University.

Mr. Cox’s political career is further accented by his work in investigative journalism and current affairs with the television program Today,Tonight where he reported on and interpreted Irish and international political and economic stories involving U.S., U.K. and French elections.
