Author of “In the Shadow of the Giant”

Joseph Contreras is the author of “In the Shadow of the Giant: The Americanization of Modern Mexico.”

During a twenty-eight-year career at Newsweek magazine he has reported from over 50 countries on five continents. He most recently was the publication's Latin American regional editor.

Mr. Contreras is currently stationed in southern Sudan where he serves as a public information officer for a U.N. peacekeeping mission.

He is also the coauthor of a 2002 biography of Colombian president Alvaro Uribe Vélez entitled El señor de las sombras (The Lord of the Shadows).

Mr. Contreras is a native of Los Angeles, CA.
