He has twice been named the visiting professional in journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and worked as a publisher, editor, national correspondent and Washington correspondent as well as abroad in the Balkans, the Middle East and Latin America.
He has won numerous awards including a 2013 award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists for his work in the Times and an award for short fiction from the National Press Club.
